In collaboration with Alana Mailes, PhD candidate in Historical Musicology at Harvard University, we are preparing a lecture-concert of madrigals, strophic airs, monody, and instrumental music. Presenting the fruits of Mailes’s research, we will share the little-known fact that all composers featured in Music of the Spies worked for the secret services, and that the courts of England, Italy, and Denmark were theaters of intrigue and dangerous games of espionage. Employment as a musician allowed for entry into the most intimate and private rooms of the court, as well as close contact with sovereigns and other influential figures. For this reason music-making came to be a convenient cover: all of the composers in our concert program – Angelo Notari, Alfonso Ferrabosco I, Thomas Morley, John Dowland, and Peter Philips – were in fact intelligencers financed by their governments....or by other patrons! It will be a gripping tale told through music, images, and words.
